OCR: Long-sought Mafia leader "Toto" Riina Arrested in Sicily Page 73 DC, 1-15/US Newswire: The undisputed head of the Sicilian Mafia Commission was arrested in Palermo by Italian authorities after a 20-year fugitive investigation, according to FBI Director William S. Sessions. Salvatore "Toto" Riina was arrested by a special unit of the Italian Carabinieri. The investigation by the Italian authorities was assisted by the FBI, specifically through computerized "age enhanced" photos that were produced by the FBI Laboratory. This was accomplished through the application of the Face Aging Computer or "Imager" computer which aids investigators in the search for missing persons & fugitives. The system offers sophisticated photocomposing & retouching capabilities which allows an operator to project the future appearance of an adult or child based upon what is discovered about the aging process through study combined with artistic skill. In Washington, D.C ., Sessions said, "Riina was considered by Italian authorities the most wanted fugitive in Italian law enforcement history, & his arrest has definitely struck a significant blow to the Sicilian Mafia. He has been linked by Italian authorities to numerous murders & had been tried in absentia & sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987." Interaction between Italian authorities & the FBI has been particularly close since last summer, following the assassinations of two judges directly involved in Mafia prosecutions.
